People have asked if I have any resentment about how long it took DR. ADDER to get published, but I genuinely don't. In a very strange way, it was doing me a lot of good while it wasn't getting published. Everybody in New York in the science fiction business was reading it. I'd get fan mail from these editors and publishers and editorial assistants, who would write back, 'I was really hoping you would send this to me. So and so over at such and such place had said it was great, and I couldn't wait until it was my turn to read it, and he was right - it's a wonderful book. Thanks for the opportunity to read it. We're not publishing it.' But they would say, 'Can you send me something else?' So it became my calling card." - K. W. Jeter
